An OER textbook that contains some basic information but does not include information regarding sleep, ingestive behaviors, sensation/perception and learning/memory. What is useful and different about this book is its emphasis on equity and each chapter has discussion questions and video links. It can be used very well in conjunction with, as a supplement to other resources or as a launching point for building a more complete resource.

This textbook examines U.S. History from before European Contact through Reconstruction, while focusing on the people and their history. Prior to its publication, History in the Making underwent a rigorous double-blind peer review, a process that involved over thirty scholars who reviewed the materially carefully, objectively, and candidly in order to ensure not only its scholarly integrity but also its high standard of quality. This book provides a strong emphasis on critical thinking about US History by providing several key features in each chapter. Learning Objectives at the beginning of each chapter help students to understand what they will learn in each chapter. Before You Move On sections at the end of each main section are designed to encourage students to reflect on important concepts and test their knowledge as they read. In addition, each chapter includes Critical Thinking Exercises that ask the student to deeply explore chapter content, Key Terms, and a Chronology of events.

This text from Dr. Franklin Williamson and Dr. Tom Aiello from Gordon State University contains all modular text content used in the LMS implementation of their American History I (HIST 2111) courses. American History 1 covers topics ranging from the colonial period to the Civil War. Original source includes Word versions of the text, lecture slides, and primary source exercises.

Art history uses multiple art disciplines to study culture and people’s development through time. Visual arts are one of the oldest forms of communication between humans and the fundamental beliefs of their culture. The background of art history has been written from the canon of wealthy individuals from Western countries, focusing on well-known art and artifacts in isolated environments. To become more culturally inclusive, the textbook is written to redefine art history by discussing art from every continent, civilization, and unknown artists and comparing different cultures that existed simultaneously.

A laboratory manual aimed specifically at Human Anatomy. Each exercise has a pre and post lab, and contains quiz-style labs that are helpful for retention of information. While there are some images, there are very few images for labeling in the manual; the feasibility of adopting this manual is dependent on what anatomical models you have available.

UGA Anatomy and Physiology 2 (Massey et al., 2019) – Galileo (CC BY 4.0)

A lab manual that incorporates images mainly from OpenStax’s Anatomy and Physiology.

A text replacement designed for 2-semester Anatomy and Physiology courses for health science students. The second edition includes text and images that are more diverse and inclusive.

A wiki-style textbook that contains many common topics in Physiology. The text was created as a class project by undergraduate students, and it is not clear if the text has been reviewed by physiology educators. PDF and printable versions are available for instructors who want stability in the material as the Wiki aspect means that anyone can edit the original material.

A lab manual aimed at instructors who wish to teach physiology labs in a course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE) format. The lab manual is broad enough to be applicable to health science majors. iWorx is the data collection platform used.

Incorporates many elements from Biology published by OpenStax. It augments that with other resources such as Wikimedia and its subsidiaries (e.g., Wikipedia, Wiktionary, etc.). The organization of this text might be more palatable for students. For example, LumenLearning provides the text split by semester (e.g., Biology I and Biology II). Content in Boundless Biology is collected from various sources with their own licensing type, which may not be open; care needs to be exercised when remixing content to ensure that only OER content is being used in the newly created content.

Diverging from traditional biology texts, Biofundamentals fills in many of the “gaps” that these texts leave. Perennially misunderstood concepts such as the Scientific Method and nature of science, and Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium are addressed with careful consideration for comprehension. The text is also organized in an engaging manner that starts with fundamental questions of biology (e.g., How did life arise? How did life diversify, etc.) rather than the abstractness of chemistry and macromolecules. Instructors following Vision and Change guidelines may appreciate the structure of this text. However, the text as a whole suffers from a distinct lack of media. Occasional images and videos are provided, but these are far and few between. Visual processes such as membrane transport are described almost exclusively in text. The text content also does not fulfill the course descriptor due to missing content mainly related to biodiversity, anatomy, and physiology. Despite this, the text might serve as a good starting point for remixing, or as a supplement to another one.

Perhaps one of the closest examples to a “turnkey” open education solution for the major’s biology sequence. This text is in a similar vein to mainstream publisher offerings such as Campbell Biology and Mader’s Biology. The organization is consistent with those texts, and can easily replace them. Likewise, instructor materials such as lecture slides, end-of-chapter answer keys, etc., are available. With many contributing authors though, the level of content varies depending on section. For example, biological diversity of invertebrates is fairly shallow with the text organizing groups by superphylum rather than discussing each phylum individually and in detail. Instructors may benefit from remixing the book with chapters from OpenStax’s non-major’s biology textbook Concepts of Biology. This will allow for fine-tuning of the course content depending on the course prerequisites (i.e., whether students have taken chemistry).

Principles of Biology II Lab Manual (Burran and DesRochers, 2015) – GALILEO (CC BY-SA 4.0)

A comprehensive collection of laboratory exercises for students. Accessible PDFs and Word versions are available for ease of use. Each exercise is prefaced by an introduction which allows for the lab manual to stand on its own independent of a textbook. However, there are no pre/post-labs, or preparation sheets for laboratory technicians. While the laboratory manuals are licensed under Creative Commons, there appears to be use of copyrighted images. In addition, attributions and licenses for individual images is not clear. Caution is advised when remixing the content or utilizing its laboratory exercises.

Biology II Laboratory Manual (Faculty of College of the Redwoods and Tidewater Community College, n.d.) – LumenLearning (CC License Varies)

Includes 31 laboratory exercises with numerous additional, optional ones. This collection fits very nicely into a 2-semester Major’s Biology sequence. Ancillaries such as preparatory sheets, safety guidelines, and lab report rubrics are included to make this lab manual easy to adopt. A non-accessible PDF is also included for instructors who want students to have physical copies of the lab.

A brief, but well-written series of laboratory exercises related to Zoology. With only 6 laboratory exercises, it does not seem long enough to sustain a semester long course, but a word document version of the text is available to allow for remixing and addition of content.

This text takes a more phylogenetic approach to the field of botany. After a chapter covering an introduction to the field, 7 chapters discussing plant (and other organismal groups) is provided. After, plant structure and function are covered, with ecology and conservation being the last section of the book.

A well put together overview of botany. The text is not ordered in the more “traditional” phylogenetic manner. However, this enables the text to show cross-cutting concepts more clearly as a result. The text includes organisms outside of plant phyla such as fungi and algae.

A collection of 21 labs relevant to a botany course. Google docs are provided, so editing of material can be done easily. Illustrations by Nikki Harris are excellent, and help to maintain a cohesiveness to the visual presentation. All visuals are in black and white, and many are intended to be colored in by the student.

While billed as a “basic” overview of the topic, the text is quite advanced and covers the content of BIOL 190 thoroughly. The updated text means that newer topics such as CRISPR are included. However, the advanced nature of the text means that there are topics that may go beyond the scope of BIOL 190 (e.g., mechanisms of retrotransposon copying, enzyme kinetics, etc.). Curation of the text content may be necessary. One critical feature of the text is its focus on experimental history in cellular and molecular biology; this might make it well-suited for instructors who focus heavily on scientific thinking.

While intended for a 3 quarter (2 semester) major’s biology sequence, this text focuses much more heavily on cellular and molecular biology. In turn, it makes for a good text for BIOL 190. The inclusion of some chapters on evolution ensure that the text meets the C-ID descriptor’s content requirements.

The non-major’s equivalent to OpenStax’s Biology 2^nd edition. An easy-to-use textbook that is similar to mainstream publisher efforts. Of note is a comprehensive “instructor resources” section that contains helpful tools for adopting the text (e.g., syllabus language, lecture slides, etc.).

A detailed lab-manual that includes 13 laboratory experiments. Each exercise is bookmarked by a pre-lab and post-lab, making it an easily used resource regardless of the adopter’s teaching practices. Laboratory preparation instructions do not appear to be available, so preparation time may be increased.

Canvas ancillaries (CC BY) A Human Biology textbook that incorporates equity and inclusion into its content. Canvas ancillaries are available for instructors. This contains pages, quizzes, assignments, and other online learning resources for ease of adoption in an online setting.

A text replacement that is applicable mainly to non-major’s or allied health microbiology. Two remixed versions, Allied Health Microbiology and Microbiology for Allied Health Students, is also available.

Contains many common laboratory experiments for a Microbiology course. The brevity of the lab manual makes it more applicable to a 1 lab/week course. Some BSL-2 generating protocols are also employed, namely the culturing of environmental samples.

This WikiBooks textbook provides an outline of some of the major topics in biotechnology including the various fields of biotechnology, an introduction to the Code of Federal Regulations, laboratory notebooks and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’S), upstream and downstream process development, and laboratory skills for a biotechnology technician. This textbook primarily consists of bulleted outlines rather than narrative text and would probably work better as an auxiliary resource for review rather than the main textbook assigned for a course.

The protocols and instructor guide included in this lab manual are part of a semester-long Synthetic Biology undergraduate research course (CURE) designed by the authors. The lab presented in this manual is designed for a Genetics or Biotechnology class and has been used at both two-year and four-year institutions. Students are tasked with designing and then engineering a biological device in a bacterium (E. coli) using standardized DNA parts called Bio-Bricks from the iGEM (www.iGEM.org) registry. The process of engineering the device requires iteration of standard molecular biology cloning techniques which are outlined in the lab manual, some including video protocols. Additionally, provided are recipes for reagents, a supply/resources list, and instructor recommendations. A series of faculty training videos were created to further help with the implementation of the SynBio CURE.

This well-organized lab manual is housed in LibreTexts and each of the 21 labs begins by listing goals and student learning outcomes. Each lab contains useful images and highlights important equations and examples. The laboratory topics include basic lab skills and topics such as safety, metrics & measurements, pipetting, microscopy, spectrophotometry, making buffers and measuring pH, DNA and protein gel electrophoresis, PCR, ELISA, performing restriction enzyme digests and transformation, and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). This lab manual provides specific directions as to how students should organize their corresponding laboratory notebook and each lab asks students specific conclusion questions that they are supposed to answer in their lab notebook.

Downstream processing SOPs include tangential flow filtration and affinity chromatography using the Biologic LP system. Quality control SOPs and a competencies list for downstream process technicians are also included.

This lab manual is authored by a faculty member from City College of San Francisco and was originally a component of the Mammalian Cell Culture Course-in-a-Box website where an older version of this resource can be found. The website describes this resource as follows: This course, from City College San Francisco, teaches the techniques necessary to maintain mammalian cells in culture. The course includes a laboratory exercise using mouse embryonic stem cells (takes 3 weeks to complete). Laboratory exercises provide instruction in basic techniques of routine cell culture using common cell lines before progressing to the differentiation of mouse embryonic stem cells. Photographs and explanations of common equipment (laminar flow hood, inverted microscope, etc.) and reagents are provided. Laboratory exercises include the following: Basic Aseptic Technique; Media Preparation; Plating cells from frozen stock; Cell counting and plating; Survival assay (UV); Live Cell Identification; Transfection; Freezing cells; Stem cell differentiation. This book has been specifically created to make it easier for professors to offer a law school course on global corruption. It is also designed as a resource tool for all persons working in the anti-corruption field. The first chapter sets out the general context of global corruption: its nature and extent, and some views on its historical, social, economic, and political dimensions. Each subsequent chapter sets out international standards and requirements with respect to combatting corruption — mainly in the UN Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) and the OECD Bribery of Foreign Officials Convention (OECD Convention). The laws of the United States and the United Kingdom are then set out as examples of how those Convention standards and requirements are met in two influential jurisdictions. Finally, the law of Canada is set out. Thus, a professor from Africa, Australia, New Zealand, or English-speaking countries in Asia and Europe has a nearly complete coursebook. For example, that professor can delete the Canadian sections of this book and insert the law and practices of their home country in their place. While primarily directed to a law school course on global corruption, this book will be of interest to professors teaching courses on corruption from other academic disciplines and lawyers, and other anti-corruption practitioners. This textbook introduces key feminist concepts and analytical frameworks used in the interdisciplinary Women, Gender, Sexualities field. It unpacks the social construction of knowledge and categories of difference, processes and structures of power and inequality, with a focus on gendered labor in the global economy, and the historical development of feminist social movements. The book emphasizes feminist sociological approaches to analyzing structures of power, drawing heavily from empirical feminist research.

This resource provides an interdisciplinary and intersectional framework for thinking critically about the historical and contemporary applications of knowledge about gender and sexuality. This may be straightforward in some arenas, but we will find navigating gender and sexuality terminologies (e.g., sexual orientation, what constitutes “sex” in particular places and times, sexual identity, gender and gender identity, among many other discussions) to be a rigorous historical, personal, political, philosophical, and anthropological study (to name just a few of the intellectual traditions we encounter). Throughout we encourage readers to interrogate social ideals and other narratives that aim to “naturalize” gender and sexuality. In other words, we will address gender and sexual identities and practices and meaning as historical, cultural, and political phenomena. We will question whether contemporary categories infer that bodily practices, pleasures, and knowledge are permanently tethered to universal, transhistorical ideals and thought. We will investigate the intersectional contexts where sexualities and genders take shape and provide. Finally, throughout readers and students should begin to understand the rich and deep efforts of gender and sexuality based social movements and thought and appreciate the ethical significances of various claims about gender and sexuality.

The Science of Human Potential is designed to be a concise, cohesive introduction to psychology textbook. Psychology is described as a science studying how hereditary (nature) and experiential (nurture) variables interact to influence the thoughts, feelings, and behaviour of individuals. The remainder of the text is organized into sections entitled “Mostly Nature” (biological psychology; sensation and perception; motivation and emotion), “Mostly Nurture” (direct learning; indirect or observational learning; cognition), and “Nature/Nurture” (human potential, with regard to each of human development, personality, social psychology, maladaptive behaviour, and professional psychology). Includes H5P review exercises at the end of each chapter. Readable and editable versions are available, as is a hardcopy for sale. This book has good applications, but there are no chapters on sleep and consciousness, and on stress and health psychology at all.

After the first three foundational modules, a discussion of mental disorders ensues to include depressive, anxiety, personality, schizophrenic, eating, and obsessive-compulsive to name a few. Each chapter begins with a quotation, key terms are bolded, images are included, and references are listed at the end. I appreciate Part 1: Thinking Like a Political Scientist and its 10 chapters. Given the amount of content that needs to be covered in a POLS 110 course, instructors may decide to forgo Part 1  or somehow incorporate it with the other parts. Unlike OpenStax’s American Government 2e, Attenuated Democracy leaves individual-level matters to Parts 9 and 10. For example, Part 10, Civil Rights and Liberties, which includes 9 chapters, is at the end. I have found that my students are very interested in these topics, so I am not sure how students will feel engaging with these topics at the end, compared to the beginning, of a course. There do not appear to be Chapter Lecture Slides for the textbook, which could be viewed as a current limitation.

This is an open-source, modern physics textbook typically for third-semester students majoring in engineering, physics, or chemistry. An emphasis is placed on fundamental principles as well as numerical solutions to equations where no analytical solutions exist. The content begins with optics and uses that as a stepping stone to wave phenomena and quantum systems.

Calculus-Based Physics is an introductory physics textbook designed for use in the two-semester introductory physics course typically taken by science and engineering students. This is the second of two textbooks for this course.

In this book, each of the first 5 chapters is short and includes a laboratory exercise that can be completed in about an hour and a half. The approach I’ve taken is to introduce the electric and magnetic field on an equal footing (which is in fact the way the subject was developed historically). As empirically motivated postulates, we take some primitive ideas about relativity along with the expressions for the energy and momentum density of the fields.

Another goal is to introduce the laws of physics in their natural, local form, i.e., Maxwell’s equations in differential rather than integral form, without getting bogged down in an extensive development of the toolbox of vector calculus that would be more appropriate in an honors text like Purcell. Much of the necessary apparatus of div, grad, and curl is developed first in visual or qualitative form.

This introductory textbook is organized into two parts: Part I explores “What is politics?” and Part II focuses on “Understanding the discipline of political science”. Part I comprises five chapters: Chapter 1: Conceptualizing Politics, Chapter 2: Ideologies of the individual, Chapter 3: An institutional view of politics, Chapter 4: How public law structures politics, and Chapter 5: Theories of democracy. Some of the modules removed from College Physics have been put back in, most notably modules on momentum, rotation and special relativity. This textbook is intended for a one-semester introduction to physics course, requiring as little mathematics as possible. Students are expected to have taken some algebra and geometry at high-school level, but no higher level of mathematics is required (and use of algebra and geometry is minimized as much as possible, in order to emphasize the concepts of physics). The courses this textbook is intended for often go by the name of “conceptual physics,” “descriptive physics,” or “introduction to physics.”

This is a textbook for the first semester of University Physics for scientists and engineers. It covers classical mechanics, and a brief introduction to thermodynamics. The presentation and approach are similar to Mazur’s “The Principles and Practice of Physics,” in that conservation laws are introduced before forces, and one-dimensional systems are thoroughly covered before moving to two dimensions. Although the course is “calculus based,” the book has been written with the understanding that many students may be taking calculus simultaneously as a corequisite, so the use of calculus is relatively sparse.

This is a calculus-based book meant for the first semester of the type of freshman survey course taken by engineering and physical science majors. The ELC professional development model was designed to improve the quality of teacher candidates’ Practicum field placements and align teaching in field placements with Learning Standards used in the teacher education program. Teams of four educators from varied settings worked in a Practicum placement setting for one semester to improve their teaching and align it with Learning Standards. An action research approach improved teaching challenges teams faced. Research articles were read to improve teams’ teaching challenges by implementing one agreed strategy. Teams video-recorded, assessed, and reflected on the impact of the strategy on their teaching, on teacher candidates’ learning and on children’s learning. This text compiles six case studies from this model to illustrate how teaching challenges were improved. Appropriate for practiced educators as well as educators in training, this text provides a real world look into applying Learning Standards in early childhood classrooms.

Media, Society, Culture and You grew out of an experiment in developing and employing open educational resources (OER) at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Professors from various disciplines were encouraged to find or develop texts to replace or supplement course materials. Because the field of mass communication changes so rapidly, the author of this text decided to “go all in” on OER materials and develop, write, and edit the first version of this electronic textbook with plans to update it at least once per year. Chapters are kept relatively short, but links lead down various intellectual paths for curious readers to follow.

This book is authored by Ohio State University lecturer, Jasmine Roberts, who has drafted an incredibly informative and detailed breakdown of the public relations origin, role in society and trends.

In this book Caulfield outlines how to fact check a variety of mediums, including Twitter identities, images, and much more. He offers short and informative chapters that help to guide students to primary sources and in depth research.

Brian Champagne wrote a casual but incredibly informative layout for journalists yearning to tackle reporting, interviewing and multimedia in the digital world. He writes that this book does not teach the who, what, when, where, why, and how of reporting; its goal is to teach how to present the journalism already known via electronic media, primarily television. Further he declares, “A reporter who understands her medium knows she must write words to fit her video. In this book it is Rule #1: Write to Video. Write that on your hand, the wall, and your computer monitor. Needlepoint it onto fabric, etch it in metal, and carve it in wood.” It is a perfect addition to any aspiring newsroom.

The creator of this resource is well known for his videos in the IT and Networking domains. They are well done and clearly address the certification test that they are focused on. Even if you don’t use the entire set, this is an excellent resource. This set is made up of 95 Videos, with a total running time: 25 hours, 38 minutes.

“ND” indicates that this resource may not be modified. Printing is also prohibited.) This book has had several revisions. While this newer version is much better than the pre-revision 2.0 material, be aware of the limits of its license.

The book has gone through numerous revisions and continues to be updated. It does have some ancillary material available on the website. There is a series being written, starting with this book, and now includes a book covering 5G technologies.

This course, and ancillary materials (which are not yet part of the LibreTexts material) follows the CompTIA Linux+ curriculum and prepares students for that certification.

A 12-chapter book with chapters on women and health, women and poverty, rights of the girl child, violence against women, etc. Each chapter has multiple choice questions, discussion questions, essay questions, and a list of resources. The book is 13 years old so the statistics in the text are outdated. But, the issues remain the same. The profiles of women and organizations could be assigned as reading which would lead to excellent discussions about women’s health issues around the world.

This comprehensive Physical Geology Textbook is a major adaptation of Earle’s Physical Geology Textbook. The order of topics is changed and topics are significantly edited and expanded. The topics included in this book are sufficient to meet C-ID topics and course objectives.

A comprehensive Physical Geology textbook created in British Columbia. The chapters are well-organized and include helpful comprehension-check questions. The authors have created many useful diagrams and imported others. Many original photographs and case studies from the Pacific Northwest are included. This text is less exhaustive than others but is well-focused and sufficient for introductory Physical Geology.

A wide-ranging and thorough Physical Geology Textbook. It includes a multitude of images and linked videos. Short comprehension-check quizzes are included. This text addresses topics to a slightly higher degree of complexity than some other textbooks. Example field sites are from domestic and international locations, but the focus is on the American Southwest.

Laboratory Manual for Introductory Geology (Deline et al., 2019) – LibreTexts (CC BY-NC-SA 3.0)
This useful resource is a complete Physical Geology lab manual created by instructors at University of West Georgia. The manual includes a significant amount of helpful instructional material along with many thoughtful lab activities. A California Community College Instructor might face some obstacles: in some cases the text needs edits; in many cases the examples are very specific to the southeastern US; in other cases the activities rely on specific maps or other lab materials that are not included. Still, there is a lot of useful stuff in here.

This robust resource is a complete Physical Geology lab manual created by California Community College Instructors. It is full of California-specific examples, is extremely well-organized, and contains useful problem sets.  It is also well-aligned with the C-ID Lab Activities and objectives.

This useful resource covers many, or perhaps all, of the topics an instructor might cover in a Historical Geology Lecture Class. It doesn’t read like a typical textbook. Instead, it provides an excellent selection of modular chapters and other resources. The “Other Resources” are especially helpful. They include case studies, lab skills activities, virtual field experiences, and virtual sample sets.

A well-organized laboratory manual with many interesting activities for students to learn from. The activities correlate strongly with the C-ID description of Historical Geology Laboratory, so they should meet most college’s SLO’s. In some cases, the activities require the instructor to provide samples (e.g. sedimentary structures and fossils). In some cases, it will be necessary to view the activities in color, either by printing in color or by viewing on a device.

The Physical Environment: An OER Geography Textbook (Ritter, 2020) – LibreTexts (CC BY-SA 4.0)
This textbook includes text, images, videos, and quizzes to support all the content and nearly all of the objectives outlined in the C-ID Descriptor for physical geography. An instructor using this textbook would most likely have to provide additional supplementary materials related to earth history and might have to provide some additional astronomy materials.

This textbook includes text, photographs, videos, diagrams, and tables that support virtually all of the content and objectives listed in the C-ID course content and objectives. The text is particularly well-provisioned with photographs. The text does not include the lab activities listed in the C-ID descriptor. An instructor would have to supplement these.

Physical Geography – Version 1 PDF (CC BY). Accessed July 2021. The textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to many topics in the field of physical geography, but it is unbalanced in favor of geology/geomorphology. There is no unit focused on the hydrosphere. Instead, there are two units – Unit 16: Shaped by Coastal Processes, and Unit 17: Shaped by Rivers & Running Water, discussing mostly the role of water as a geomorphic agent. Thus, the textbook falls short of information about important topics like the properties of water, ocean currents, lakes, etc. Also, there is no unit about the biosphere. Each unit starts with a Goals and Objectives section and ends up with a Summary. The text is well illustrated with tables and figures. However, there are no discussions, study questions, or other activities to help students understand the concepts introduced.

The Climate Toolkit is a resource manual designed to help the reader navigate the complex and perplexing issue of climate change by providing tools and strategies to explore the underlying science. As such it contains a collection of activities that make use of readily available on-line resources developed by research groups and public agencies. These include web-based climate models, climate data archives, interactive atlases, policy papers, and “solution” catalogs. Unlike a standard textbook, it is designed to help readers do their own climate research and devise their own perspective rather than providing them with a script to assimilate and repeat. The activities in the manual are divided into five sections that include weather and climate basics, present climate impacts, past climate change, future change and impacts, and strategies for climate mitigation and adaptation. These are followed by three appendices which contain information about the on-line tools used in the activities in this manual; a catalog of on-line and print resources produced by research groups, government agencies, and community groups involved in climate and sustainability work; and background on the history and key players in the international climate negotiation process. Though originally aimed at undergraduate non-science majors, the manual has been broadened for a wider audience in non-academic settings like community groups, service organizations, workplace study groups, and faith communities.

This project builds upon decades of archival research and data collection, including the recording of oral histories, under the Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre’s (SRSC) mandate of ‘sharing, healing, and learning.’ ‘Realizing Healing and Reconciliation through Education’ is designed to increase the capacity of the SRSC to educate local, regional, and national audiences about the history of Residential Schools.

Laying Canadian stories alongside the global phenomenon of femicide in other colonized countries such as Mexico and Guatemala, this book underscores the common, interlocking effects of racism and sexism on Indigenous women. Family members, scholars and researchers, artists, activists, and policy-makers provide their decade-long perspectives, providing testimony and evidence that sexualized and racialized violence is not only a product of historic colonization but continues to manifest in entrenched systems of colonization and global femicide.

This OER examines food sovereignty and food experiences in Haudenosaunee communities to explore ways of upholding our Haudenosaunee responsibilities to the land and enhancing the local practice of food sovereignty. World Geographies: A Critical Introduction was designed to serve as a foundational resource for students taking World Regional Geography courses. An excellent book on introductory computer programming topics. The book’s website has a great deal of additional information and resources. The book itself has great vocabulary words, it has exercises, and includes the use of Jupyter Notebooks, where you can edit and run code right in the LMS environment. The material has been translated into several different languages, see the book’s website for a complete list.

Think Python is an introduction to Python programming for beginners. It starts with basic concepts of programming and is carefully designed to define all terms when they are first used and to develop each new concept in a logical progression. Larger pieces, like recursion and object-oriented programming, are divided into a sequence of smaller steps and introduced over the course of several chapters.

This book serves as a guide or tutorial to the Python programming language. It is mainly targeted at newbies. It is useful for experienced programmers as well. The aim is that if all you know about computers is how to save text files, then you can learn Python from this book. If you have previous programming experience, then you can also learn Python from this book.

This is part of MIT’s OpenCourseWare website. It includes a course syllabus, reading list, lecture videos, Powerpoint slides and code, in-class questions and video questions as well as assignments – all available for download. The course is intended for students with little or no programming experience. It aims to provide students with an understanding of the role computation can play in solving problems and to help students, regardless of their major, feel justifiably confident of their ability to write small programs that allow them to accomplish useful goals. The class uses the Python 3.5 programming language.

This resource is a well-written text that covers the material quite well. It is a bit older than other material, but it is still a very valid resource. The main website has some other variations of this text. It is intended to teach the design and analysis of basic data structures and their implementation in an object-oriented language. In this edition, the language happens to be C++. This book is not intended to act as an introduction to the C++ programming language. Readers of this book need only be familiar with the basic syntax of C++ and similar languages. Those wishing to work with the accompanying source code should have some experience programming in C++.

There is assembly language sprinkled throughout the book, so you will in fact learn assembly language—but only as a means to a different end, the latter being understanding of computer systems. It emphasizes the topics needed for the study of computer architecture: bits, bit patterns, operations on bit patterns, and how bit patterns represent instructions and data. This course is equivalent to a semester-long junior college or university course (except, perhaps, for the emphasis on bit patterns). The emphasis of the course is on understanding how computers work. This will provide a basis for further study of computer architecture and computer software. The MIPS processor, the subject of this course, has a well-designed architecture and is particularly fruitful to study.

This is a new open textbook version of the material mentioned above. Applied Discrete Structures is designed for use in a university course in discrete mathematics spanning up to two semesters. Its original design was for computer science majors to be introduced to the mathematical topics that are useful in computer science. It can also serve the same purpose for mathematics majors, providing a first exposure to many essential topics.

This text covers the standard topics in a sophomore-level course in discrete mathematics: logic, sets, proof techniques, basic number theory, functions, relations, and elementary combinatorics, with an emphasis on motivation. It explains and clarifies the unwritten conventions in mathematics, and guides the students through a detailed discussion on how a proof is revised from its draft to a final polished form. Hands-on exercises help students understand a concept soon after learning it. The text adopts a spiral approach: many topics are revisited multiple times, sometimes from a different perspective or at a higher level of complexity. The goal is to slowly develop students’ problem-solving and writing skills.

Introduction to Public Communication is an open textbook created specifically for Indiana State University’s COMM 101 course. A guiding team of communication instructors compiled content from other open sources and wrote original content to complete the text. In addition to more traditional public speaking content this text also includes chapters on interpersonal, professional, and small group communication as well as global engagement and culture.

Fundamentals of Public Speaking is an OER published by the College of the Canyons for their Comm 105 course. The text begins with the fundamentals, ethics and communication apprehension before walking students through the process of developing, researching, and delivering speeches. In today’s world, it’s difficult or even nearly impossible to function without some level of communication literacy. That term, communication literacy, refers to the ability of an individual to not only convey their ideas, information, and messages to others, but also to be able to interpret and understand the ideas, information, and messages that they receive. The processes involved in communicating, or transferring messages and ideas between people, are far more intricate than many people recognize. In today’s world, these processes include a variety of forms and styles, such as interpersonal, digital, public, media, intercultural, transnational, gendered, racial, group, and organizational communication, to name a few. We refer to people who have the ability to communicate effectively in one or more of these modes as having communication competency, which requires a high level of “communication literacy” and knowledge of how communication actually works.
